Haridwar is also a popular destination for adventure lovers. Chila Wildlife Sanctuary, a part of Rajaji National Park, covers an area of around 240 sq. km. which attracts wildlife lovers with its pristine scenic beauty and rich bio diversity. It has 23 species of mammals including wild elephants, leopards, spotted deer, sambar, nilgai and a rare species of anteater and 315 fauna species. One may watch a herd of elephants roaming majestically in the jungle or may find oneself excited by a wildlife of many kinds including tigers, leopards, jungle cat, Himalayan yellow throated marten, samber, cheetal, barking dear, wild boar, langur, ghural, sloth bear, king cobra, woodpecker etc. This is a haven for birdwatchers with over hundred and eighty bird species like peacocks, jungle fowls, kaleej peasants, cuckoos, hornbills, woodpeckers and warblers nest in the forests. The park has a dense vegetation of broad-leafed mixed with deciduous forests besides chir and pine trees scrubs and some stretches of open pastures. You can drive in a jeep or even on an elephant back and also spend the night in the forest. There is a temple of Goddess Sureshwari situated in midst of beautiful Rajaji National Park. The river shelters fish in abundance. Fishing is allowed with permits.
